LugRadio Live USA 2008 – Last Chance For Speakers
We have a few speaker slots for [LugRadio Live USA 2008](https://lugradio.org/live/USA2008/start) on the 12th and 13th April 2008 that we are about to finish up and fill, and today is the close of the Call For Papers. If you would like to speak, mail show AT lugradio DOT org – this is your last chance to submit a paper.

Quickies
Step back, put on the protective visor, and get ready for some quickies:
* I did an interview with Orv at SCaLE about Ubuntu, Canonical, LugRadio, SCaLE, speaking and various other things. Go and [grab it here](https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/~orv/jonointerview.mp3).
* [Ubuntu Developer Week](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDeveloperWeek) is kicking arse and taking names, and do continue to [Digg it](https://digg.com/linux_unix/First_ever_Ubuntu_Developer_Week_announced). It is going to be an excellent week, and I am looking forward to seeing you all online at the sessions. 🙂
* Big thanks to Ilan for taking me into Los Angeles and showing me around – after three years, I finally made it there. Hollywood is an interesting and wacky place, and I certainly want to get back there again.
* The Ubuntu California LoCo team did an excellent job at SCaLE with the Ubuntu booth. It is great to see LoCo teams in action, and it sounds like it was a great success. 🙂
* Nathan from the Ubuntu Californian LoCo team did a video interview with me while I was in the bar at the end of SCaLE. Go and [see it here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r9LKiwXicQ). I was a few beers in at this point, so be sympathetic to my ramblings.
* Right now I am in San Francisco and I fly back later today. At 1pm I head to The Metreon in San Francisco to do a tour of the venue for [LugRadio Live USA 2008](https://lugradio.org/live/USA2008/start). Google are sponsoring the venue and loads of other stuff, and the always awesome Leslie and Cat from the Google Open Source center are helping to pull everything together. They are doing a stunning job there. 🙂
* Meryl gave me a a ‘*Meanie Baby*’, which is a beanie duck with it’s head removed. This duck thing continues to plague my presence at conferences, and she is the ring-leader. She must be stopped.
* Ken VanDine needs to change his name to Ken Van Damme. He was also seperated at birth from Jorge Castro.
* WARNING: I am writing up a big blog entry about metal. Those of you who are into false-metal will not be my friend.
More soon.

Be Excellent To Each Other
When looking at communities and trying to de-construct and understand how they work, we can often approach it from an overtly task-based approach – identifying methods in which communities are successful at *doing stuff*. Of course, effective, measurable outcomes are important in community, but it is also critical to sometimes help your community step back and identify some of the things we often take for granted, one such thing being *friendships*.
Everyone, and by that I mean *everyone*, including you, dear reader, needs to feel respected and socially connected with fellow community members – if this most basic need is met, *effective community* can give you a sense of belonging that is difficult to replace. Communities that get this right experience incredible commitment from their members, and their members engage at not only a collaborative level, but a social level too. Retention, be it staff or volunteer, is critical to the success of any collaborative group, and you can translate this into *foster a culture of people being decent to each other, which invariably results in friendships, and they will be happy and stick around*. Of course, this culture will not paper over the cracks of bad processes, resource issues, bottlenecks and other unsavoury problems, but good community is about multiple strands coming together to form a solid, consistent picture.
It can often be tempting to let the pieces of the jigsaw overshadow the bigger picture, don’t let it happen to your community. 🙂

Performance #1. Check.
Just finished the always excellent [SCALE](https://www.socallinuxexpo.com/) conference in Los Angeles. All in all, an excellent event, and thanks again to the conference organisers for making myself, and all the other speakers feel incredibly welcome.
SCALE saw the first showing of my brand new talk *Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants: The Coming Of The Linux Desktop* and it seems have gone down pretty well – the audience were fun, joined in and I had a blast doing it. I was also surprised how busy it was – the room was pretty full, standing room only, and apparently there was an overflow room (with a video feed of the live talk) which also overflowed. Tempted to put my ego in that room – when I heard about an overflowing overflow room I felt unparalleled levels of smugness. It will be just my luck that there were free donuts in there or something, hence the crowd. 😛
I am now sat at LAX about to fly to San Jose and over to Google to deliver the talk as a Google Tech Talk. I will be booking speaking dates in the next few weeks – if you are organising a conference and would like me to come and speak, do [drop me an email](mailto:jonoAtubuntuDOTcom).

Ubuntu Developer Week – Your Shipment Of Win Has Arrived
Some time ago, I saw down with the other [two](https://archivedblog.jonobacon.com/?p=1024) [horsemen](https://archivedblog.jonobacon.com/?p=1028) and we hatched a plan to have a week full of incredible IRC tuition sessions that show how to get involved in Ubuntu as a developer with packaging. Well, this resulted in the incredible wickedness that shall be known to all humanity as [Ubuntu Developer Week](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDeveloperWeek) and it happens from the **18th – 22nd Feb**.
All of the events happen on IRC, so [get connected](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDeveloperWeek/JoiningIn) and suck up the following sessions, each led by a range of community experts:
* Packaging 101 <----- a great place to get started with packaging * Patching Packages * Launchpad PPAs * MOTU School * Introduction To The Server Team * MOTU Processes * Virtualisation * Kubuntu * Ubuntu Derivatives Team * Debdiffs And How To Get Them Submitted * Hosting Code With Launchpad * First Steps On Contributing * Desktop Packaging Session * SRU/Security Updates * Firefox 3 Extension Packaging * Writing Scripts For Automated Desktop Testing * Bughelper - Making Bug Work Easier * Bug Triage * MOTU Q&A Session * Library Packaging Bring on the love - I hope to see you all there. Remember, if you want to get involved with packaging - head over and read the [Getting Started](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/GettingStarted) page - this is a great time to get involved with this week of sessions. Spread the word, blog it and [Digg it](https://digg.com/linux_unix/First_ever_Ubuntu_Developer_Week_announced)! Look forward to seeing you all there! 🙂

LugRadio Live UK 2008 Dates Announced
Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, I am pleased to announce that the [LugRadio Live UK 2008](https://lugradio.org/live/UK2008/start) dates have been finally confirmed, and the event to rule all other events will be taking place on the **19th and 20th July 2008** at the **Wolverhampton Union Student Union, Wolverhampton, England**. It is going to rock harder than an entire fleet of cars, being made out of rock, drag racing them at high speed and then driving them into the grand canyon. Rock, with a healthy chunk of roll, thrown in for good measure. 🙂
This is the same venue as where we held LugRadio Live UK 2006, and we have some incredible things planned for the event. Right now we are deep in LugRadio Live USA 2008 plans, but the ball is rolling for UK plans, so if you would like to speak, head over and see [this page](https://lugradio.org/live/UK2008/callforpapers). Also, if you would like to exhibit at LugRadio Live UK 2008, send us a mail to [show AT lugradio DOT org](mailto:showATlugradioDOTorg).
So, stick the dates in your diary, bring it on. 🙂

Women in Open Source
Currently over at [SCALE](https://www.socallinuxexpo.com/) in Los Angeles and the Women In Open Source track has just kicked off today – looks like it is going to be an excellent day, with some facinating tracks. It is being kicked off by my friend Allison Randell, who is also speaking at [LugRadio Live USE 2008](). Speaking of which, we have worked hard to try and get the demographic of women up at LugRadio Live – although we have a number of women who attend as visitors, the speaking rosta has been somewhat devoid of women, for no other reason than the lack of papers being submitted. This year I am pleased to see that we have a number of women confirmed – Danese Cooper, Val Henson, Allison Randal, Belinda Lopez and Kristen Accardi, and we hope to see more women participating as we finish off confirming speakers.
One person who has been inspiring me in much of this is my good friend, [Emma Jane Hogbin](https://emmajane.net/), who I think really *gets* the issues involved, and will hopefully be presenting at LugRadio Live UK 2008. We have talked quite a bit on the phone about how to encourage more women in Open Source, and she is spending some of her efforts with the Ubuntu Women project. She sent her slides over and they look excellent, and particularly amusing too. 🙂

New Talk, Done
I just finished putting the final touches to my new presentation *Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants: The Coming Of The Linux Desktop* – which I will be delivering for the first time as the opening keynote for [SCALE](https://www.socallinuxexpo.com/). I am pretty pleased with it so far, and will make final changes (mostly cosmetic) over the next few days as I rehearse it. I am looking forward to SCALE, and fly there on Thursday – if you are going, let me know and we can meet up.
I find that writing presentations is like writing music – I have a broad idea of what I want to do, and then I enter into a period of writing chunks of the story, re-arranging, refining, throwing things away, and everything pretty much lines up at the end. It is a time consuming, but satisfying process, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and we will see how well it goes down on Saturday. 🙂

Metal On Demand
You know what, I try to be good to you, faithful readers. Knowing that you all share a deep and meaningful love of metal (humor me, please), I know that you want easy access to some good music. So, if you look in the sidebar of [jonobacon.com](https://archivedblog.jonobacon.com/), you will now see a little media player which plays my last.fm radio station.
I use the excellent [Banshee](https://www.banshee-project.org/Main_Page) as my media player, and the name of each song I listen to gets sent to last.fm, and this generates my [last.fm profile](https://www.last.fm/user/jonobacon/). From what I can tell, last.fm looks at this list and generates a radio station – as such, this radio station is full of the kind of music I listen to, which is, naturally, a good thing for man, woman, dog and cat-kind across the world. 😛
