Week Off

Week Off

Just a quick note to everyone, I am taking the following week off as holiday to write the [Art Of Community](https://www.artofcommunityonline.org/). This is the second and last week I am taking off to work before I hit the writing deadline. I will be responding to email, but a little slower than usual.

Ready To Jam?

Ready To Jam?

Next weekend is the [Ubuntu Global Bug Jam](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GlobalBugJam)!

This is the regular event in each release cycle in which LoCo teams from around the world get together to work on Ubuntu bugs: reporting, triaging, fixing and otherwise rocking Ubuntu. So far we really have an excellent global representation, with teams from all of the USA, South Africa, Japan, Denmark, UK, France, Germany and Ireland taking part. Right now we have 25 teams, but I would love to increase this to a big round 30. To do this, only you folks can help us achieve this. ๐Ÿ™‚

*Ubuntu California global bug jamming*

If you are part of an Ubuntu LoCo Team, Linux User Group or other type of group, this is a great chance to get together with your members, help improve Ubuntu and have a big ‘ol pile of fun.

Getting involved is simple. Simply read [this guide to running an Ubuntu Global Bug Jam event](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RunningBugJam) and ensure you add your event to [the big list of participating teams](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GlobalBugJam). Don’t worry too much about organizing a huge and overly complex or refined event: a collection of Ubuntu-loving friends armed with laptops in a pub, restaurant, university room or someone’s house is all that is needed. ๐Ÿ™‚

*Ubuntu California jamming after the jam.*

I will be blogging more about the Ubuntu Global Bug Jam later in the week. I really hope to see some more of our friends in the Ubuntu community coming together to organise events. I myself will be over in Los Angeles at [SCALE](https://scale7x.socallinuxexpo.org/) and taking part in the Ubuntu Global Bug Jam event there. Rock and roll. ๐Ÿ™‚

New MOTUs

New MOTUs

A few days ago the rather excellent MOTU Council had their first IRC meeting devoted to MOTU applications. This was one of the measures put in place to streamline how people become developers.

I just wanted to say a big *congratulations!* to Didier Roche, Christophe Sauthier, Iain Lane and Alessio Treglia for being approved as brand-new MOTUs! Congratulations, folks! ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you want to get on the Ubuntu train and make it rock that little bit harder? [Click here](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/GettingStarted).

Ubuntu LoCo Team Meeting Scheduled

Ubuntu LoCo Team Meeting Scheduled

Just a quick to ask you lovely people to put the date of the **28th Feb 2009** in your diary. At 6pm UTC we are organising an Ubuntu LoCo Community meeting. You can find out more details on the [meeting page](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeamMeeting).

The meeting will take place in `#ubuntu-locoteams` on Freenode. Everyone is welcome. We are going to be kicking off regular LoCo Community meetings. These are going to be part of the staple diet of getting LoCo Teams on the rails to success. Exciting times, friends!

Rock The Docs

Rock The Docs

Well, the [LoCo Docs Day](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoDocsDay) is almost upon us: Thu 12th Feb. The aim of the day is for our community to work together to improve our LoCo team documentation which is [here](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeams). Getting involved is simple:

* Head over to [here](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeams) and take a look at the documentation there, read through it and expand and improve on it. You are welcome to work on any of the existing documentation and expand it where needed. You are also welcome to write additional documentation that is missing. We want our docs to be as authoritative and expansive as possible, so if it is missing or needs work, dig in!
* Come and join us in `#ubuntu-locoteams` on Freenode while the LoCo Docs Day is happening. In there we will be discussing additional documentation to work on, and sharing ideas, thoughts and achievements. Its going to be a lot of fun!
* Having a great LoCo Docs Day is also about spreading the word. As such you can help by:
* Blogging about the day and encourage people to get involved.
* Microblog on identi.ca and Twitter throughout the day. Today I created a new identi.ca over [here](https://identi.ca/group/ubuntulocoteams) but there are other identi.ca groups available by putting `!ubuntu` and `!ubuntudevelopers` in your messages.
* Tell your teams about the day: spread the word on your mailing list and in your IRC channels.

There are a few areas in which I am particularly keen to see us refine our documentation:

* [The FAQ](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoFAQ) – I would love to see the FAQ become a truly authoritative document. If a question has been asked in our community and answered, it should appear on the FAQ. This is a great place to begin making a contribution.
* [Join a Team](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeamJoining) – this page should not only tell people to join a team but to also share a little of the culture and excitement about why LoCo teams are a fun and exciting place to be.
* [Start a LoCo Team](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeamHowto) – this page should outline the specifics of how to set up a team, get resources in place and build a local community. I would love to see some of our existing LoCo leaders take a look at that page and add their insight.
* Additions to the [Knowledge Base](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeamKnowledgeBase) – the Knowledge Base is a collection of articles and documents about how to build and run a great LoCo Team. If there is something missing from there, do add it. Also, take a look at the existing content and feel to add to and improve it. I would love to see our Knowledge Base be an expansive resource for all manner of topics for our community.

Our documentation is a sure-fire way of helping LoCo teams to be successful. Better documentation will help teams be more productive, more interesting and help spread the word of Ubuntu more effectively. Lets come together on the 12th Feb to help “rock the docs”. ๐Ÿ™‚

See you in #ubuntu-locoteams! ๐Ÿ™‚

Teesdale Conservation Volunteers

Teesdale Conservation Volunteers

I wanted to post something a little different from the norm:

(can’t see the vid? go [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLiVkvQSEjA))

My brother is the guy behind [Teesdale Conservation Volunteers](https://www.rotters.org/) and they perform a tonne of different rural activities such as charcoal burning, woodland development, training and even organise a woodland festival. I am hugely proud of him and his family: they are good eggs.

In this vid he teaches how to do charcoal burning. Also, a minute in you can also see my other brother, Simon. ๐Ÿ™‚

Good work, Bacon bros!

Rock The Docs: The Ubuntu LoCo Docs Day

(thanks to Efrain for the rather cool term ‘Rock The Docs’)

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I am pleased to announce that on the 12th Feb we are going to have a [LoCo Docs Day](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoDocsDay)!

I know, its pretty darn exciting.

Now, some of you may be wondering what exactly this *LoCo Docs Day* is. In a nutshell, it is when the Ubuntu LoCo community comes together to refine, add to and otherwise improve our [Online LoCo Documentation](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeams). We already have some excellent documentation, but much of it needs a new lick of paint and a good ‘ol fashioned refresh. As such, we are all going to come together to help make this happen on the 12th Feb.

So, how do you get involved? Simple:

* Save The Date! Put the 12th Feb 2009 in your calendar as the LoCo Docs Day.
* On the day (or before if you want to join in the usual chit-chat) join the `#ubuntu-locoteams` IRC channel on Freenode.
* Contribute some of your time and expertise going in and contributing content to the wide variety of [documentation](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeams). If you are unsure of where to start, why not take a look at our [LoCo FAQ](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoFAQ) and see there are any questions that you have had in the past that the document does not answer. We would all love to see the FAQ become a hugely authoratitive document. There is a suggestion of other pages that need a refresh [here](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoDocsDay).

Everyone can help with the LoCo Docs Day. You don’t need to be a LoCo Leader or expert. If you don’t know where to start, do come to `#ubuntu-locoteams` on the 12th Feb and we can help find something for you to work on.

We need every drop of help that we can. Every word that you contribute, every sentance that you find the time to write, is going to help make it easier for LoCo Teams to be successful, and in turn make it better for LoCo Teams to share Ubuntu with others. This is such a great way to contribute and we hope to see you on the 12th in `#ubuntu-locoteams`!
