Yes young chicken, it is true

Yes young chicken, it is true

Well, the ever sarcastic Peter Oliver (regular at Wolves LUG and Perl guru) informed me that the free software song cover has appeared on NTK. I like the fact that it is regarded as not as scary as the original. Thats nice, I think. All this after it appeared on Jamie Zawinski’s blog. Strange all of this.

Anyway, tonight Sooz and I went around Wolves getting footage for her video. Met a nice guy at a local indian restaurant. We will be visiting there next week. 🙂

While we were driving to town, I took the Mac down and had MacStumbler running which sniffs out wireless networks. To my surprise it detected 4 networks on the way there – I did not expect there to be any WLANs in town. The funny thing was that one of them did not have WEP enabled. The question is – do I log on? Is it legal? Is it right?

It is a shame I forgot my chalk… 😉

Stuff and nonsense

Stuff and nonsense

Went out last night and had some fun. 🙂 Got back in and checked some email and flunked out at about 4am. Woke up today with the intention to do some work, but it should really be *some* work. 😀

I got an email from Aq last night and it seems that legendary hacker Jamie Zawininski has noticed my metal Free Software Song cover. He mentioned it on his LiveJournal, but passed no comment on it. Hmmm; I am glad that people are listening to it. 🙂

I need to make some important updates to this site, many of which I plan on implmenting today. Some things are more urgent than others, and I should hopefully have them online soon. I am also starting work soon on a document for education in schools that has come from discussion on the forum with TomM an TomB. There some more people coming on board, and the document should help groups like Schoolforge push this important area.

I hate virii

I hate virii

I tell you what, I hate all incarnations of a virus, and they are so incredibly pathetic. A virus has infected someone on our LUG who was running a Windows machine, and now it is sending me approval messages with 100k attachments all the time. Pathetic…truly pathetic…

More work today. Sent of an article this morning, and I am now gonna give Aethera from theKompany a whirl with another one of the LXF contributors. Then it is onto more writing. I want to write *a lot* today. We are off out tonight, so I want to have earned it. 🙂

Just listening to AC/DC now…you know I *need* to see these live, and Motorhead; but that is in October. 🙂

Yellow belt is a coming

Well, Karate was fun tonight and we may be entered into our yellow belt gradings soon. Kata is coming along and I am looking forward to the first grading.

I have been thinking of a few new documents to write connected to free software and education, and we have been discussing it on the forum. 🙂 Thanks go to the two Toms who are lending their experience.

I am going t do some work a bit later, but I have lots of stuff I want to get on with. Nevermind, must hit the deadlines first I suppose.

Tired

Tired

Today is going slow. I just have no motivation today, and I have done nothing useful yet. I am gonna start working soon though.

Tonight we have Karate. We got our yellow tips last week which is a 9th Kyu grading; yellow belt is 8 Kyu as far as I know. We will be graded in a few weeks when our Kata is sorted.

I am in one of those moods where I want to do something different, something to break the schedule. Every day I sit here and write, and I feel like doing something new. Who knows, I might jump out of a plane or something later.

Last night I was taking a look at the CSS Zen garden. The really outlines how little I know how to use CSS properly, and I am gonna have a play with it when I finally get some time.

DRM

Well tonight was an interesting LUG and we discussed for the most part DRM and its implications. Although I am nbot fully coverse in the subject, it does not sound good – and we were wondering what we can do to spread awareness. As I stated to the other guys in the LUG – I am not entirely convinced Microsoft will get DRM made a legal requirement, as many companies would go out of business – yes they are small, but they do have rights. Aq provided the slave trade as a counter-argument, and although I think it is possible, I am not convinced it will happen. Aq did however make an important point – we should all plan for the worst however because if it does happen – there will be no Linux.

Well, today seemed to be good for the forums. First day and 11 registered users, and a stack of messages. Obviously the true test is in how long people return to a forum, but I hope the charity and education forums do prove useful.

Right I need some kip as I am up early tomorrow.

First forum day

Well, today is the first day with my forum live. It is just a case of seeing how it goes now. I am pleased that 6 people have joined already and it is only the morning. A guy called Tom Moore has also joined, and will be discussing things in the Education forum to help us get free software into more schools. I will be pleased if something really productive comes out of these forums, and even not, shoudl be a bit of fun anyway. 🙂

Well today is more writing and then tonight we have a LUG. 🙂

Forums

Forums

Well, today I decided finally that I was going to set up some forums on this site, and viola they are here. I have traditionally stayed away from setting them up as I did not see the point, but I would like to set up a few forums that enable discussion on different things – not specifcally related to me or this site. An example of this is a forum on charities and education, and how they can use free software. I hope these forums will prove to be useful. 🙂

Right, head over there and register and start chatting – and also get as many people over here as you can. If you have any suggestions for new forums let me know. 🙂

Old flame / Webcam

Old flame / Webcam

I just popped on IRC this morning to figure out what was wrong with a cronjob and I met an old pal of mine on there called Martin Brooks. I used to work with Martin on Linux UK back in the day and we went to the Linux Expo in London years back where Linux Format were heckled. That was the night I persuaded Nick and Rich to give me a shot at writing for them. Memorable days. 🙂 Good to hear Mart is doing well for himself, and I hope to meet up with him sometime soon.

Well, the webcam is online. Yes, I know thew quality is bad – it is some cheap cam that I bought of QVC of all places – it was only about £15 if I remember right. I might get another and have a couple of cams online. 🙂 At least you can now see the Bacon ugly mug online staring at a computer screen or scratching his arse.

Qt Success and more metal

Qt Success and more metal

Well, just been down to the Rock Cafe tonight to promote a gig on Monday next week. People seem to be excited that we are playing which is cool. 🙂

Well, after a while I got Qt/Mac compiled and it all seems to be working OK. I am gonna write some sample code to see how well it works. I also want to see if I can get Qt merged well will the Apple Project Builder. No KDevelop for MacOSX. 🙁

Today was a busy day and tomorrow is busy again. Tomorrow night I am off over to my buddy craigs house with a bunch of mates and he is cooking. If there are no more updates to jonobacon.com you know that his cooking is not good.
