Neck pain

Wow, the gig last night was cool. The whole place went crazy and the mosh got pretty violent. It was incredible, and I can’t wait to gig again. 🙂

Well, off to Bloodstock today, and I have just checked my mail this morning. There is an interesting thread starting about wireless security on the Wolves LUG mailing list – I am interested in seeing people’s views on if you can legally connect to a LAN that does not use WEP. Your thoughts?

Metal daze

Well, today is the day for our gig at the Little Civic in Wolves. Today is also Bloodstock and my mate Paul is coming up for the fun. 🙂 I am ducking out of the first day to do this gig and then going tomorrow.

Well, after all the fluff over patent threatas to free software, it seems the McCarthy report has been held back. this is good news until it is put up for proposal in septemeber. I am proud of everyone who took part with the online patent protest, and those who went to the actual demo. Nice one folks. 🙂

Ramble rumble

Ramble rumble

Well, I just added the UnitedLinux ramble. I am now sat in front of the box and Sooz is working on her masters work. I went to karate tonight and really enjoyed it. I plan on practicing a lot. 🙂

Fiddled with Qt some more tonight. I am having some weird permissions issues with the Mac. Although it is fun messing around with it, I still don’t get some things. No, I have not needed a second mouse button yet.

Lazy Blighta’

Well, with a grand plan to get up at 9am, I woke up at 11am. Neverming; it has been a busy week this week anyway.

Messed around with Qt some more last night. I am still trying to figure out the smaller points of getting it all working fully. Part of this is learning how Mac OS X manages things such as applications; it seems that they have a stack of files associated with them and I need to figure out what they all do.

I have recently been thinking a lot about the relationship between UnitedLinux and SCO. SCO is part of the UnitedLinux consortium, but they have a serious issue with the rest of the members. I have some info on this coming up soon in a new ramble.

The day after the demo

The day after the demo

Well, it seems the patents demonstration has been an online success. This site was down for a day while it all happened, and I noticed plenty of others that were taking part. I am going to add some things supporting this scheme to this site on my next update.

Today I did some writing which was good, and tonight fell asleep on the couch. I have quite a few things I want to do over the next few weeks, and it is just a case of finding the time. Bloodstock is on at the weekend, but Hammerfall have pulled out. 🙁

I watched some videos over on the Trolltech site, and they go on about how incredible Qt is. You know, I do like Qt, and I am beginning to like it even more. My fiddling with the Mac OS X version seems cool, and the recent press over Qt 4 is looking interesting. I might revive some old code I wrote and release it for three platforms. Now that would be cool. 😀

Patent demo and fluff

Right, first things first – archivedblog.jonobacon.com will be closed tomorrow all day to join the patent protest (); I recommend that you do it also if you run a website. There seems to be stacks of other sites getting involved. Although the main site will be clocked off though, you will still be able to access the forum at https://archivedblog.jonobacon.com/forums/ to discuss the rally and other things.

The whole patents thing is pretty scary, as it can seriously restrict what we can do in free software and instead fatten business folk up. Remember that free software is software for all – not just businesses that are rich – support the patents rally so we can ensure that our software remains free for everyone.

Well, now I got that our of the way I can carry on the normal log entry. Got up late today as I had the gig last night and completely ignored my alarm clock. I am now going to go and do some work and then off out tonight to meet up with some mates. 🙂

Remember the patents young grasshopper…

The battle commenced

Just got in from the Battle Of The Bands at the Rock Cafe, Stourbride and we won. 😀 It was a fun night, and we now have 100 nicker in the wallet of our drummers dad who funded our t-shirts. Stroll on. 🙂

I am now sat here in our living room waiting for my fish and chips to cook. I am hungry, tired, need a shower and have to be up tomorrow for more work. Bring it on. 🙂

Thanks for the comments about the site by the way. I am working on a few more bugs, but these are minor things that should be resolved soon. I generally like the new design; I keep reviewing it in my head when I come to the site.

You are all crazy

You are all crazy

I just logged on this morning on my Windows 2000 machine with IE5 (yes I need to work in Windows when writing), and checked the new site design. Aside from a few minor bugs that I fixed, it seems to work in every browser I have tested. I would like to hear how it performs in Opera, Safari and Galeon however. 🙂

One side effect to this process has been that I have right royally knackered the valid HTML on the page. They are only really minor problems, but I will get onto them when I have time.

today is more writing and then a gig tonight with Seraphidian. I have not gigged for ages, so I am looking forward to this. 🙂

New design

Well, I was planning a redesign for a while and at 8pm tonight I decided to do it. It is now 2.27am and I have just uploaded it. Do you like it? I hope you do. 🙂

As far as I have checked it works in all browsers, but there may be a few bugs lurking about. If you spot some, drop me a line, or mention it in the Website Forum

Oh and one other thing, the webcam is offline until I fix some code with it. It should be online soon, whenever that may be. 🙂

Freedom of music

I got an interesting email today asking for some licensing information for my music to be placed on the music page. After placing the information on the page (that the music is freely distributable), the emailer responded by saying it was a shame that my music is not totally free.

I sent a response stating that I consider music as a art, and therefore I do not want it modifying as it would cease to become my art if modified. In this sense I do not consider it non-free. Another reason I considered was the aspect that the music is in a binary format, and has little opportunity for modification. I am certainly not putting my original music files online as I do not have the resources available to do this.

The question is – is it wrong to see music as non-free just because you cannot modify the music. I don’t know to be honest, but I am sitting on the side of the fence that says freedom with music denotes distribution and not modification. Let me know your thoughts. 🙂
