Upgrades
You know, I really hate computers sometimes, and particularly if they put me in a position where I cannot do my work properly. This is the story…
I am writing an article for a well know Mac magazine about dealing with wireless networks. I download MacStumber and it works fine; great for detecting wireless nets and their SSID/WEB status. The other major piece of software I need is Kismet. I go to the Kismet page, the author does not provide binaries so I decide to get the source and compile it. I download the source and read that it needs the wireless drivers for the Airport card. I then go to the site for these drivers and find out that it needs 10.2 or above. I have 10.1 on my machine, and I am awaiting Panther any day now, so I did’nt worry and decided to start trying to hack the code to see if I can fudge it into working on 10.1. No luck with this effort and I have to accept defeat.
This has pissed me off. The view of the wireless driver people was that no one uses 10.1 anymore so they don’t support it and it doesnt handle driver loading as well as in 10.2 and upwards. Well, I use 10.1 and if MacStumbler works, surely their drivers can. Bah humbug.
This is interested as I come from a culture where software can be upgraded freely, and I forgot how annoying it is that you cannot just go and download software and get it working when you want to. Now I just need to wait for Panther.

Hai!
Well people, there is one difference to you logging on here now. The difference being that your amicable webmaster has now been graded a yellow belt at karate-do. Yes, we went to our grading on sunday and throughout the 2 hour session did our basic moves, first kate and some combinations. At the end of the session we were presented with our certificate as a yellow belt. We are both chuffed to bits and happy that we have acheived this first grade. Onto the orange tip now. 🙂
Tonight I am meetying up with Jayne (jaynos from the forums) to discuss the use of Linux in a charity situation. I am looking forward to meeting up with her and I think something productive will come of it. 🙂
Today I have lots of work to get through and a meeting at 3pm.
Stuff and nonsense
Went out last night to see Undefined (buddies and good band). They playe well, new material was good. Spend most of the night doing a weird jamaican leg dance taught to me by Chris from Fireswitch. It was hilarity bottled. 🙂
Today we are off to see Cancer and Detrimentum (detrimentum being friends of ours and Cancer being a wicked death metal band re-formed). Should fun. 🙂
Well, it seems the SCO situation rumbles on, and I wonder if anyone is taking any notice of them anymore. At the moment I have more exciting toys to play with such as the new Blender (2.23) which was recently destroyed by /. in the usual manner, and I have been playing with the KDevelop 3.0beta which is really cool, although could do with some usability enhancements. Its mad how much KDevelop has come on, and I am pleased to see the Gideon codebase really getting stable now. The stuff like integrated valgrind, code completion et al is cool. 🙂

Hacking nuke
Well, last night I had my first go at hacking PHPNuke themes for the Seraphidian site. I am quite pleased with what I have done, and it all seems pretty cool. The only thing I find a bit strange is the Nuke way of writing HTML. Mixing attribute tag definitions and proper CSS seems strange, but is all working now.
Today I have some writing to do, and then Karate. We have also ordered at 10ft Seraphidian banner. 🙂

Banner-tastic
I am just in the process of getting a banner sorted out for Seraphidian. The problem I have had is that I needed to get our JPG logo file re-set as an EPS file so it can be scaled up. I submitted the job with the full expectation that when it was ready I could view it on Linux. How sadly mistaken I was. It seems that the EPS support on Linux is pretty pathetic with nothing being able to open up the file properly. Addmittidly I don’t know much about EPS, but I would have thought there would be something to open it properly and scale it – such as the GIMP.
Other than that I have been working on a few different things. Doing some work on a new feature for theKompany.com, some more writing, and I went to ST Records yesterday to buy some CD’s. I got the new Akercocke, Morbid Angel, Dimmu Borgir, King Diamond and Brainstorm CD’s and I got the second Dearly Beheaded album. 🙂
Yes, I know
Yes people, I know one post a week is not much for the homepage, but last week was mayhem!! I will be a bit more considerate, and actually update my site.
Well been busy with the band a lot recently. We have a number of new things in the works, and we did a gig on friday night which was amazing. I will stick some pictures online later on the Seraphidian site. We also just launched a competition today. 🙂
I am planning on getting a photo gallery put on here also. I have lots of photos from the Linux Expo, various LUGs, family trips and so on to put online. You can also leave your comments when they are on.
I am pretty chuffed ast the moment as a new Blender has been released. It is 2.30; the first in the 2.3x series and features the new UI improvements. It is looking pretty sweet, and I look forward to more updates.

Rock and roll
Yesterday we did the Kage Kharnival festival and it was great fun. It was cool to meet up with Kill II This again, and I am looking forward to gigging with them again in the future sometime.
Cambridge is a nice place, and the Junction is a great venue. Nice big room with a great sound. The drumkit was triggered so there was a nice click on the beat and it was damn fine fun. We are sticking some pics of the gig on the Seraphidian site soon, and I can’t wait to play on Friday at the Planet. 🙂
Today I have been relaxing and recovering, and tonight I need to finish off some work for tomorrow.

Strangeness
This week has been busy, hence few updates, but we are basically get ready for the Kage Kharn gig on Sunday. We have burned a stack of Relentless EP’s, free samplers and plenty more. See the Seraphidian site for more details.
I am having some weird email problems today. For some reason I seem to be only getting *some* emails, and they are taking a while. Not sure why, and I have looked into it, but I suspect it is mail forwarding problems. Seems to be working now, but if you try to (or have already tried to) contact me and got no response, post on the forum as I always read that. Weird shit.

Playing with software
Recently I have started working for theKompany.com doing some marketing and promotion for their products. Its something I have been interested in doing for a while, and no, I am not a glorified salesman. I have been getting used to fitting in their framework and I am now downloading and running their applications and checking them out. Interesting stuff.
Went to a computer fair tonight, and we are gonna buy an Epson 900 printer tomorrow. The reason – because it can print on CD-Rs! you know, this is awesome, and we will have some Seraphidian Relentless CD-Rs at the festival on Sunday. You can get some samples of our EP here by the way. I can’t wait to this gig, and we have some other interesting dates in the pipeline also. 🙂
The family
Well, this weekend was cool. We went up to Doncaster to see my brothers family. It was great to see them, and I am looking forward to meeting up with them again soon. I just wish I get see my family more often, but everyone (including myself and sooz) are so busy that it is difficult to sort something out. It was great seeing my little nephew Jack (the jack from my Jacks Play Ball tune); he really is fecking cool.
We got back today and I had a band practice in preperation for the Kage Kharn fest we are doing in Cambridge. Its gonna be fun doing a festival, and I am looking forward to meeting up with Conspiracy and Kill II This again. Exciting times for Seraphidian at the moment. 🙂
Well, it is stupidly late, and I need to be up tomorrow so I am gonna get some kip. G’night.
