Introducing the Hardy Heron
I am delighted to have the pleasure of announcing the *Hardy Heron* (Ubuntu 8.04), the next version of Ubuntu that will succeed Gutsy Gibbon (Ubuntu 7.10, due for release in October 2007). Not only will the Ubuntu community continue to do what it does best, produce an easy-to-use, reliable, free software platform, but this release will proudly wear the badge of Long Term Support (LTS) and be supported with security updates for five years on the server and three years on the desktop. We look forward to releasing the Hardy Heron in April 2008.
With the opening of each new release cycle of Ubuntu, we have more and more opportunity at our fingertips. Not only are our friends in the upstream world constantly innovating and extending their applications and software, but the Ubuntu community continues to see incredible growth in its diverse range of areas such as packaging, development, documentation, quality assurance, translations, LoCo teams and more. Each new release gives us all an opportunity to shine, irrespective of which bricks in the project we are laying, and this is at the heart of our belief – working together to produce an Operating System that will empower its users and shape the IT industry, putting free software at the corner-stone of our direction.
Most people only ever see the end-user view of Ubuntu, running it on their desktops, servers and mobile devices around the world. For these users, Ubuntu provides a simple, convenient means to do what they want to do easily, effectively and without unnecessary complexity. For many of us though, we want to open up the hood and understand how the system works and how to extend and grow it. Thousands of us get out of bed every day, united behind Ubuntu, ready to make a difference, working together to make our vision happen.
Importantly, our ethos of collaboration and freedom extends to the development process as well as the end product. As such, the Ubuntu development process is a very open, transparent one, and anyone is welcome to get involved. It works like this:
* Everyone is welcome to think of and develop ideas for features that could be present in the Hardy Heron release. These ideas are written as specifications (detailed documents outlining how the idea would work and be implemented). You are welcome to add your specifications to [https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu](https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu).
* In October 2007, we will hold the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA and generate a schedule of sessions to discuss these specifications. The sessions provide a means for interested parties to help scope out the proposed feature and determine methods and plans to implement it. The Ubuntu Developer Summit is a semi-virtual event in which those who cannot attend can dial in with VoIP and use IRC and collaborative editing with Gobby to take part in the summit.
Everyone is welcome to participate, everyone is welcome to get involved, and everyone is welcome to help shape the form of the Hardy Heron. Let’s work together to shake things up, make things happen and make the most compelling Ubuntu release yet. Start your engines…

The Jacket Returns
Recently, I got a rather cryptic message from Max Spevack, the Fedora Project Leader asking for my address so he could send me something. Well, today a parcel arrived for me.
A while back [my jacket was ebayed for charity](https://www.devel.co.uk/article/227/authentic-jono-bacon-memorabilia-for-sale) and [Max and Greg bought it](https://spevack.livejournal.com/11864.html). Well, Max sent it back to me, and included the following little note:
It says:
> Jono
> You do a great job w/Ubuntu.
> You should have this back. Too big for me anyway.
> Best,
> Max Spevack,
> Fedora Project Leader
You are a good guy, Max. The Fedora Project are lucky to have you at the helm.
Now, technically, this jacket is not mine any more, and I would feel a little guilty to keep it. If anyone has any bright ideas for what to do with it or who to donate it to, let me know.

New Drums
I just bought new drums. I am a happy, although poorer man. Mapex M-Series Birch kit in Transparent Black, with 22″ bass, 10″, 12″, 14″ and 16″ toms, Mapex Black Panther Steel Snare, 16″ crash, 14″ hats, 20″ ride, 18″ china and 10″ splash.
Bring it on. My neighbors are going to hate me. 🙂

UDS: Here it comes
Guess what folks, its coming to that time again…you got it – Ubuntu Developer Summit time!!
The Ubuntu Developer Summit is a week long event in which a swathe of Ubuntu contributors get together into the same venue to design, discuss and flesh out the next version of Ubuntu. This includes the entire Ubuntu team that work for Canonical, a number of Ubuntu contributors that we sponsor and a large number of contributors who attend themselves. We also have a number of organisations, vendors, press and interested parties who attend. It is an excellent way to get involved in how Ubuntu is developed and see the Open Source development process in action. With this comes a caveat though – the UDS is a hardcore development summit. It is not a conference with presentations, talks and user focused content – this is about building Ubuntu from a technical and community governance level.
The next UDS is scheduled for Sunday 28th October to Friday 2nd November 2007 and will be held at The Hilton at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. To find out more, head over to [this page](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UDS-Boston). We look forward to seeing you there!

Update
Wow, long time no update. Well, things have been insanely busy recently, on all fronts, and I have just been too busy to sit back and write some stuff down. So, here comes another burst of bullet points:
* I have recently moved over to the Ubuntu distro team formally inside Canonical and I am now closer aligned with the team. Before, I was a separate function in the company that happened to work on Ubuntu, but being part of the team formally makes a lot more sense. So far the communication lines have been much clearer and I am loving being part of the team.
* July was an insane month of travel. It went something like this, one after the other with no off days in-between – week build up to LUGRadio Live 2007 and planning, LUGRadio Live 2007, down to London for the distro sprint for a week, back up to Birmingham for GUADEC for a week, off to Oregon for Ubuntu Live and then OSCON for the week. As an example of the craziness, while at OSCON I was having something like 9 meetings a day. Busy days.
* Aq, Adam, Chris and I went out for Chinese and then returned to my gaff for a LUGRadio Sprint. In it we developed new ideas and direction for Season 5, decided on dates for the new season and then brainstormed over 50 ideas. Season 5 is going to shake things up, big time. We also discussed LRL and LRLUSA. We finally got to bed at 5am.
* Next day, up at 7.30am. Ugh. My parents came up and my dad brought some industrial strength gardening stuff to chop down the forest that had grown around the house. It was pretty hardcore – he had an outfit and everything. The pooches wondered what the hell was going on…
* Been jamming quite a bit with Seraphidian. I am now playing drums in the band, and I am really excited about it. I have been harbouring a frustrated drummer instinct for a while, and I am itching to really grow and excel as a death metal drummer and get out there and play gigs as a drummer. We have also changed our direction somewhat, still retaining the Seraphidian chug, but we are now more dynamic, thrashy and energetic. We are all psyched about this new direction, and I am really looking forward to the oodles of drumming. On Sunday I drummed for 6 hours and nearly collapsed. 🙂
I have also been having something of a music binge – expanding my already pretty hefty music collection with new bands and albums. This is the list of bands in my collection so far – if any of you metallers have any other suggestions for the kind of stuff I could like, do scribe it into the comments:
*36 Crazyfists, Aborted, ACDC, Akercocke, Al Azred, All That Remains, Amon Amarth, Anata, Angtoria, Annihilator, Anthrax, A Perfect Murder, Apocalyptica, Arch Enemy, As Blood Runs Black, Astarte, Atheist, Atreyu, At The Gates, Avenged Sevenfold, Becoming The Archetype, Behemoth, Benighted, Between The Buried And Me, Black Label Society, Black Steel, B L A Z E, Blind Guardian, Body Count, Bolt Thrower, Botch, Brainstorm, Bruce Dickinson, Brutal Truth, Buckethead, Cacophony, Cadaver Mutilator, Caliban, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Carnal Forge, Cattle Decapitation, Celtic Frost, Children Of Bodom, Chimaira, Communic, Coven, Cradle Of Filth, Crimson Fire, Cryogenic, Cryptopsy, Dark Moor, Dark Tranquillity, Dearly Beheaded, Death, Debauchery, Decapitated, Deeds Of Flesh, Defleshed, Deicide, Demon Hunter, Demonoid, Destruction, Dimmu Borgir, Disincarnate, Dismember, Dragonforce, Drudkh, Dublin Death Patrol, Dying Fetus, Edguy, Enslaved, Enter My Silence, Entombed, Exhumed, Exodus, Face Down, Faith No More, Fear Factory, Gamma Ray, Glenn Tipton, GodSend, Gojira, Gorerotted, Grave, Grave Digger, Grip Inc, Guns N Roses, Halford, Hammerfall, Hate, Hatebreed, Hate Eternal, Hatesphere, Hayseed Dixie, Hearse, Heavens Gate, Hellyeah, Himsa, Iced Earth, Ihsahn, Illdisposed, Ill Nino, Immolation, Immortal, Incubus, In Flames, Insision, Iron Maiden, Job For A Cowboy, Joe Satriani, Jono Bacon, Judas Priest, Kamelot, Kataklysm, Katatonia, Killswitch Engage, King Diamond, Kreator, Krisiun, Labyrinth, Lamb Of God, Lost Soul, LUGRadio, Machine Head, Malevolent Creation, Malignancy, Manowar, Mastermind, MD45, Megadeth, Meshuggah, Metallica, Mnemic, Monstrosity, Morbid Angel, Mortal Sin, Mortician, Mortification, Motley Crue, Motorhead, Mudvayne, Naglfar, Napalm Death, Necrophagist, Nevermore, Nile, Nonpoint, Obituary, Origin, Overkill, Ozzy Osbourne, Pantera, Pestilence, Pissing Razors, Possessed, Primal Fear, Prong, Rhapsody, Running Wild, Sabaton, Sanctification, Sanctuary, Saxon, Seance, Sepultura, Seraphidian, Seventh Avenue, Severe Torture, Shadows Fall, Shatter Messiah, Silent Civilian, Sinner, Skid Row, Slayer, Slipknot, Soilwork, Solstice, Steve Vai, Still Remains, Stiltskin, Stratovarius, Suffocation, System Of A Down, Testament, The Acacia Strain, The Black Dahlia Murder, The Crown, The Defaced, The Forsaken, The Great Kat, The Haunted, Trivium, Ugly Kid Joe, Vai, Vile, Vital Remains, W.A.S.P, White Skull, Witchery, XXX Maniak, Yngwie Johann Malmsteen, Yngwie Malmsteen…*

Dell, Ubuntu and My Dad
I am sure you all saw that [Dell machines are now available pre-installed with Ubuntu in the UK, France and Germany, as well as the USA](https://www.ubuntu.com/dell). Well, one new customer who bought some Ubuntu-Dell goodness is my dad. Linux really is ready for the regular user. 🙂

The legend gets in touch
A while back I was [trying to track down a guy who really gave me my first break in Open Source](https://archivedblog.jonobacon.com/?p=981). I knew he was called John something, but my poor hapless brain cells failed me on his surname. A dude called Kris Marsh did some digging and discovered he was John Dorman, and it all came flooding back to me.
Well, look who I got an email from today:
> From: John Dorman
> Hi Mate,
> You owe me a pint do ya!??? Lol
> Regards
> JD
This is incredible. I have mailed back John and hope to meet up with him for that pint sometime soon. Very excited!

LUGRadio Live And Unleashed 2007 Video
A kind chap in the audience at LUGRadio Live 2007 filmed *LUGRadio Live And Unleashed 2007* (our live show at LUGRadio Live) in its entirety and has uploaded it to blip.tv. It is great fun, and filled to the brim with discussion and amusing bits.
[Go and watch it here](https://blip.tv/file/318124).

Quickies
Quickies:
* I am on Holiday until Wednesday next week. Expect little response to work related shennanigans, but urgent queries can go to my mobile.
* [This blog post](https://archivedblog.jonobacon.com/?p=1007) which was then [fridged](https://fridge.ubuntu.com/node/1063) and importantly, [dugg](https://digg.com/linux_unix/Ubuntu_In_The_United_States) caused a flurry of USTeams interest in nailing the goal of an approved team in every state by the end of the year. In one day, new teams were created for Alaska, Idaho, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Texas, Vermont, West Virgina and Wisconsin. Great work to the incredible USTeams mentors and the fantastic new volunteers who stepped up to build these teams. Ubuntu really is kicking arse and taking names in the US of A. 🙂
* A couple of interviews with me released recently from Ubuntu Live. First, [this one from Sun](https://mediacast.sun.com/details.jsp?id=3437) and second, [this interview from Fresh Ubuntu](https://www.archive.org/download/HarlemQuijano_TimBoboskyUbuntuLive/036Freshubuntu23jul07.mp3) with Mark Shuttleworth, Gerry Carr (our Marketing manager) and I.
* I have started the grandiose house-cleanup and I am getting it into shape. To this end, I have ordered a skip for the rubbish. You know, I feel a certain sense of achievement from ordering a skip – another one of life’s ambitions finally achieved.
* Facebook has sucked less than I expected, and given me one great boon – put me in touch with a slew of old schoolmates, who are in the process of organising a re-union. I am *really* excited about this. I cannot wait to meet up with them all. 🙂

Looking for good people. Apply within.
